How we sample employees inside a payroll application audit
Why high earners alone are a weak sample, and which pay scenarios belong in a financial audit of payroll processing applications.
A neat extract of the top twenty salaries looks diligent and still misses the warehouse team whose night premium was mapped to the wrong pay code. When we plan a financial audit of a payroll processing application, we build the sample around scenarios, not prestige.
Scenarios that earn a seat
- Ordinary monthly salary with no exceptions
- Overtime on a public holiday
- Recurring transport or shift allowances
- Partial-month joiner or leaver
- Leave encashment or unpaid leave in the same cycle
What we ask the application to show
For each selected employee we want the input that drove the calculation, the payslip lines, and the posting batch that hit the ledger. If the application cannot show the intermediate calculation for an allowance, that absence becomes a finding in its own right.
Size without theatre
Sample size follows risk and headcount bands agreed at scoping. Expanding the sample because a spreadsheet can hold more rows is not a method — it is noise. Re-performance on a smaller, well-chosen set usually surfaces the configuration issues that matter.
